METRO VAN LINES DID A GREAT JOBOverall Rating
Mover reviewed by Michelle Weisenberger on 02/05/10

My husband is in the military and we have used moving companies many times in the last few years. A few months ago we relocated from DC to Houston, TX from a 2 bedroom home and booked our move with Metro Van Lines. Unlike our past moving companies they didnt surprise us in the end with a bunch of extra charges, they were very honest and upfront about everything. I also wanted to say that the foreman who led our job as well as the sales rep who booked me communicated with me very well. I got all my stuff and there was no damage as well as it came right when they said it would. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND USING METRO VAN LINES FOR YOUR MOVE. (-:

SCAMMERS!!!Overall Rating
Mover reviewed by Val on 02/03/10

I was scammed just yesterday by this company. I called a company called "Personal Touch Movers" out of Rockville, MD and then Metro movers showed up. My original quote of $316 became $900 once the men showed up. Once I called the office to cancel the move the VERY rude lady told me that it was $300 to cancel so I was trapped. The bad thing about it is that when I called to schedule the move they sent me over a contract which I read and had issues with. I quickly called back and spoke with a woman named Selena who clarified that ONLY the mattress and glass needed to be covered. She advised me to go to Walmart or Target and buy mattress covers and some bubble wrap so I dont have to pay to use the movers supplies. So when the mover got there he says that ALL the furniture MUST be covered and that I had to pay to USE their mattress covers ($6 each x 25) and tape ($4.50 per roll). Because everything HAD to be covered my 3 hours to move became 6 hours because they CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY wrapped everything and used an ENTIRE roll of tape on every piece of furniture. To add insult to injury these crooks dont even have a truck. They are renting a BUDGET truck. Also be mindful that there is a $20 document fee AND after he comes up with a total cost of your move they charge you 15% of that amount for fuel (mine was $80). Vengence is His and I believe that there is a special place in hell for a company that would do this to people. I will pray for their evil souls. Save yourself the drama and money and always have the company come out and give an estimate after looking at your furniture. I know thats what I will be doing for now on.

I would avoid these movers. They bait an switch by quoting a very low price then nickle and dime you TO DEATH. (I had to pay $150 for a roll of bubblewrap!) They even charge $6 per use of moving blankets. I was very unhappy with these movers.

Don't consider this company, PLEASEOverall Rating

Don't use Metro Van Lines. Just don't do it. They pulled the ole bait 'n switch on me, and the actual cost ended up being about $400 more than they had quoted me. I could see $100 more... but $400? Come on now. The customer service is terrible, too. They won't help you at all, with anything except to sell you on the move. After that, you're on your own. The movers were sort of nice guys, I guess, but they were really slow and complained a lot. It took five hours to move one bedroom -- no living room furniture. They got in a fight with the manager from my old building, and ended up almost getting the cops called on them. In addition to that, they lost one of my large items. It was only a two mile move, and they managed to lose something. According to customer service, it must have just disappeared into thin air. What a mystery! Who knew that a moving company could also do magic tricks? I hate moving, but SERIOUSLY... I would rather come help you move FOR FREE than to see anyone else use this company.

I'm kicking myself for not googling them too. Quoted $1062 for a move from MD to MN. I was told on the phone that I could pay with my check card, and then found out the day before the move that they would only accept personal check, cash, money order or cashier's check. They couldn't tell me how much the supplies would be, to which I replied "How can I get a money order if you won't tell me the price?" They charged me $1226 at the moving site and then $482 for "supplies" for things that were already packed. The driver said our stuff would be in MN on Nov 11 (yesterday) and now I find out that they won't even pick it up from the warehouse to move it until NEXT THURSDAY. Won't discount the "packing supplies", won't refund any money, won't guarantee me a delivery date or time, and keep telling me that my contract has all this information. Which is certainly does not.

They quoted us 834 dollars for a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom move. When they got there and had all of our stuff on the truck they upped the price to 1500 dollars and said if we didnt' want to pay they would take our stuff back off the truck and charge us the 834. Total scam and we are doing something about it, you should too. Contact the better business bureau and go to moverescue.com and contact them immediately.

Scam Alert / Horrible ServiceOverall Rating

I too was quoted at $970 and it ended up being $1619 when my stuff weighed LESS than the orginal quote. Basically their run a scam and can get away with it. I just got off the phone with Sue, the customer service rep after she claimed not to have my check on file. She yelled, kicked and screamed without me raising my voice. She even hung up on me 2-3 times before I finally got her to calm down and hear me out. By far the most inappropriate and unprofessional situation I've ever been in. And because I'm so far away I can't drive up to her office and share my thoughts as she did. I need to make sure I get my stuff first. ...if I don't get my things, haha, hell will break loose.

Originally quoted $800, then $1500, final price $3000+ stolen items!!Overall Rating

Same story as all the others. Only I am still finding stuff missing!! They left an hour before us, and didnt arrive until an hour after us-hmmmmm-where were they? WHAT were they doing? Now I know, rooting through our stuff, stealing jewelry, and CDs, and God knows what else. My husband is in stage 4 cancer, and I have severe spinal disease, so we are not, as yet fully unpacked-but we are finding more and more missing items. Not only did they keep raising the prices (and holding my items ransom till I paid), but they stole from me!! when I tried to contact the office-at first they kept switching me to different "lines", told me the person I dealt with NEVER worked there, then actually just hung up on me. I tried again, and I got screamed at by a Puerto Rican woman (just mentioning that-because it was hard to understand her thick accent!), I mentioned the stolen items, the overpricing, and also that they just left my fridge out on the front porch!! I told her it was easily brought in, it just needed the doors taken off. She screamed why should they bother? They were working hard all day for you!! I'd like to know when that was?? They were MIA most of the day, and the rest was spent taping, and wrapping items that did not need to be wrapped-just so they could charge me $800 in tape and crap! Need I mention it was only a 2 bedroom Mobile home, and we didnt even take the appliances or half the furniture? I want some action-who do I contact?? V

They quoted me $1,800 to move 2,500lbs to California....it ended up being $6,700.......yes we ended up moving 5,000lbs, twice the weight I had expected...so the price should have been.....$3,600......no way.....they charged us for every useless box they said they had to use......wrapping up metal chair legs with boxes and wrapping everything they could think of......the packing cost us $2,200....when we had done a complete boxing job already....they said they had to do it for insurance reasons....I offered to decline the insurance....but they wouldn't do it.........crooks...and they know it.........I am still recovering from the shock of a move that cost 4 times what they had quoted me......STAY AWAY.....I wish i would have googled them first..........run away from this company.....I hope a class action suit will stop them.

We moved with "Metro van Lines" in January, 2008. When looking for a moving company in the DC and MD area. Metro Van Lines and Best Time Moving gave us identical low quotes. We were wary because both websites had some identical language. When we asked Metro about this, they claimed to have nothing to do with Best Time and suggested that someone may have copied them. I was surprised when the movers showed up in a Best Time Movers truck and used Best Time Movers boxes. We were careful to tell them not to use materials without permission, since they charged a fortune for tape, bubble wrap, etc. They put EVERYTHING in their incredibly expensive garment boxes. They put packed SUITCASES in garment boxes and when they couldn't find anything else, pillows. When we got to our destination (late) they gave me a final bill that was nearly $1,000 more than what we agreed on and demanded cash (late in the evening). There was never permission given to use any materials but ours and no accounting of what was used. Finally, I tried to work things out with their office. The office said that they would keep our things if I didn't pay. The nasty woman on the other end of the line screamed that I could sue them for my money back if I didn't like it. I said that I would unload the truck myself and they tried to leave with our possessions. I called the police. The police arrived and said that they could not simply take our things and that she would arrest them for theft if they tried to leave. At that point, the Metro supervisor, who was on the phone, told his men to take our things back to our old homes and dump them there. Luckily, the police told them that they couldn't. Then he told them to dump our things on the sidewalk, which is what they did. They dumped our things (we dragged them in in the rain in January) and I did not pay anything. Scam was worse than I could have expectedOverall Rating

I got hit the same way as other reviewers. Charge for packing materials was absurd. Movers are typically a deceitful bunch but Metro is the worst that I have encountered. Estimate of $650 became $1,400. Unbelievable. Perhaps a class action suit is the way to go. Their practice of deception must be stopped!!!

Incredible SCAM!Overall Rating
Mover reviewed by Cristina on 10/28/08

Got a quote for $600 and 6hrs to move a three bedroom apartment for less than a mile. It took them 10 hours, many of which were spent putting miles of tape around the boxes. The final real price? $3500! This includes $1600 of packing supplies and $450 for fuel; which the foreman estimated to cost them only $90. They won't take anything that is not boxed so if you have trash bags with clothes that are not that valuable/important make sure you carry them yourself otherwise you'll pay a huge amount of money for the boxes! In the end two very expensive speakers (~$2000 each) and 1 couch got damaged. The foreman assured us that they would completely cover the repair. When we called them back we were told that they only give 60 cents per pound which comes to $75 per speaker. This company is a complete SCAM. DO NOT BELIEVE anything the foreman tells you. HIRE SOMEONE ELSE TO MOVE YOU.

First of. METRO VAN LINES AND BEST TIME MOVERS are on and the same company, operating under two names. They are scam artists. Everything is well planned out. Bait and switch. They give you a very low quote and then more than double when they get there. Regardless of what pre-packing you do, they will charge you an obscene amount of $$$$ for "wrapping". The worst company and people I have ever dealt with. STAY AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN. They don't disclose anything upfront. They will wait till the have your stuff loaded, before they tell you the change in charges. And if you don't like it, then there is a $175/hrs charge to unload your stuff. 7hrs minimum. In other words, the hold your stuff hostage. THIS PEOPLE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN. SCAM, SCAM, SCAM, SCAM, SCAM

Well, Metro Van Lines got me too. They quoted me $499 for a 4 hour move. They ended up charging me 15% for fuel surcharge, $500(!!) in packaging charges, and ended up taking 7 hours. The total? $1350. Utterly ridiculous. Based on previous moves and the amount of furniture being moved, my wife and I estimated that the true cost of the move should have been around $600-$700. These guys will rip you off, consider yourself warned.

STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS! They are a scam and rip off. They quoted us $475 for a move in 2007 from Arlington to Reston (only a one bedroom apt) and the final bill was over $1,300. The overage was mainly due to "materials" that they insisted they were required to use for insurance purposes. We've moved many times, using larger moving companies than this, and I've never seen someone use so much wrap, boxes, tape and other materials. The bill would have been over $2,000 if we didn't insist on speaking with their boss when they informed us that a wall unit would require $900 in packing materials to move. I WOULD NEVER USE THESE GUYS. THEY ARE A TOTAL SCAM!

I have same story as previous post. The quote was $450 and the foremen wanted me to pay $17xx. We paid $15xx after 20 minutes negotiation( I paid for that 20 minutes too). They put every thing in our garage. The movers asked $100 tips ($50 each) to place my piano into final place. We refused that. And it ended up that my piano was exposed under the sun for over 3 hours and I had to find someone else to move it and of cause I paid extra for that piano. 10% fuel charge was added without written notice before the moving date. The foremen asked me to sign that paper without showing me the 10% extra. Over $800 was charged for the packing. Some boxes are more expensive than the contents in it. The quote was 5 hours moving plus 1 hour traffic, I was asked to pay 10 hours for full unloading. The result was: we paid 8 hours, but almost everything was unloaded in my garage. (The piano was unloaded in front of the garage) If you don't want waste your money, if you want to be happier, please don't use Metro Van Lines.
